1. Gregory Helms def. Tatanka 2. Non-title: KC James & Aaron "Idol" Stevens def. Brian Kendrick & Paul London 3. Diva Search: Layla El won talent contest 4. Rey Mysterio NC Ken Kennedy 5. Vito LoGrasso def. Sylvan Grenier 6. Sylvester Turkay def. Dustin Starr 7. David Batista & Bobby Lashley def. William Regal & Fit Finlay Analysis: The show opened with Great Khali & "Khosrow" Daivari, who rejected Undertaker's challenge for Last Man Standing at Summerslam. There's a story here, for sure. Well, UT doesn't like taking "no" for an answer so he's out, dressed for action, and beats up Khali & Daivari. Khali is knocked down with a chokeslam for the first time on Smackdown. Later, Teddy Long would reschedule the LMS match for next Friday. According to Dave Meltzer, it seems that Khali has bombed on the road and so they're moving the match up so they can do some editing to try to make him look good. He's not long for Smackdown, IMPO. 1st match out of the gate has cruiser champ Greg Helms moving up in class to face Tatanka. Decent opener, and past history suggested that Helms would fall here, but that wasn't to be. Helms hit the Shining Wizard and gained the fall, but ref Charles Robinson failed to see Tats slide his left leg under the rope. Smell a rematch between these two next week, but a pattern is forming with Tats. Get screwed one week, get the win back the next. It happened vs. Sylvan, and now Helms. You can't fault Helms here, as he got what he thought was a clean pin, but it's just human error on the part of the referee. Those things do happen occasionally, and in cases like this, it usually leads to an offended party turning heel. I've a feeling that's about to happen to Tatanka, but I'd rather not see that. Vicki Guerrero is trying to negotiate peace between Chavo & Rey Mysterio. Rey's willing to make it work, but can't make guarantees, but Chavo is trying to sell Vicki on the idea of Rey exploiting Eddie's memory. It would come to a head when Chavo interfered in the Mysterio-Kennedy match. As Rey went for the 619, Chavo came running down. Rey went after him, and you can see ref Nick Patrick leading Kennedy out of the ring. Chavo knocks Rey into Vicki, who is trying to stop the fighting. She pushes Chavo away, and Rey backs away up the ramp, fighting back some tears. They're talking about turning Vicki, but do they really need to do that? Her shrieking will remind some of Stephanie McMahon, circa 2000-02, only worse. I had read that some people saw KC James as the 2nd coming of Bobby Eaton. Facially, that's certainly true. "Idol" Stevens? Meh. I guess their unofficial team name will be the Teacher's Pets. Bleh. Unexciting. Michelle McCool is basically being used as an FU to Stacy Keibler, right down to her entrance. Consider Michelle the new Ms. Hancock. The newbies gave a good accounting, rallying from a difficult start to get the win over the tag champs, but Stevens had to employ a leverage violation to get the pin on Kendrick. That will set up the tag title match, either next week or at Summerslam. As of now, only 1 Smackdown match has been set for Summerslam, and that's a World title tilt between King Booker & Batista. "Windfall" star Luke Perry is a special guest. He's from Nashville, and a big WWE fan, hence getting his own video package and entrance music. Whee. Backstage, Ashley Massaro was making friends with Luke, interrupted by Kristal Marshall, who was hitting on Perry. I'd like to see Kristal get together with Jonathan Coachman over on Raw. I think they have something in common. Back to this year's Diva Search. Good thing this disaster is ending in 5 days. They brought in a rent-a-jobber to spar with Jen & Milena, and he tapped to a cross armbreaker from the latter in under :10. Layla did what she does best, dance, dressed as a cop, and won the crowd over. Pretty easy to do, since Milena basically sabotaged her effort by spending more time talking. I think they should've played Elvis' "A Little Less Conversation" as the soundtrack. The fans crapped on JT, Milena, & Jen, making Layla the winner by default, and it's looking more & more like she will win the first prize. What to expect? Either Jen or Milena's gone on Monday, and it comes down to the remaining three on Wednesday. After all the hype getting Syl Grenier repackaged as an ambassador representing his native Quebec, he's suddenly falling back to JTTS status. He lost last week to Tatanka, and now he's putting Vito over. J-Me-L was getting queasy on commentary. He basically hates both men. Vito with the Code of Silence, then what I call the Vitolock (blindfolding the victim with his dress and applying a hammerlock). Sylvester Turkay squashed a rent-a-jobber this week, after deferring to Elijah Burke last week. Know what I'd like to see? These two as a tag team. They reek of championship material. King Booker was exuding confidence as he considered his title defense v. Batista at Summerslam, but once he got to the broadcast table, he just got flat out annoying. He even took over play-by-play near the end of the match, which merited getting muted. Between him, Sharmell, & J-Me-L, poor Michael Cole was barely able to get a word in edgewise. Pre-match, the King's Court, reunited after squaring off 3 times in the last two weeks over the US title, were arguing over who was in charge. Maybe they'll turn Regal full face after all. After all, he was your designated jobber. Decent, but not spectacular. Finish saw stereo spears to the Court, followed by Bats finishing off Regal with a spinebuster. Batista then cut a short promo on Booker where he thanked the faux king for holding his belt for him. Looked like we were going to get a fight, but no go. Boogeyman's on his way back. Maybe his first feud back should be with Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP). Porter continues to string Teddy Long along before signing on the dotted line. Agents will do that with football rookies, holding out for more money than they are really worth. As I noted last week, Porter illustrates just how ridiculous this concept is. I don't know how well he was over at Deep South, so the jury's out on him. Local affiliate will have My Network programming in effect the week on 9/4, so it looks like they may have to move Smackdown to a new time for 2 weeks or it'll go to WB/CW a wee bit early. A good idea might be to check out www.TVGuide.com and see if they're listings go at least four weeks ahead. J. C. Gilbert |

As of now, only 1 Smackdown | match has been set for Summerslam, and that's a World | title tilt between King Booker & Batista. What's with tag teams beating the champions in their debuts? It was slightly different with MNM because the champions they beat were Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio who had other things going, probably needed to be free of the titles, and it was obvious that Melina was a star. None of the other teams deserved such a debut. It really makes London and Kendrick look like flukes because they have nothing else going on. | I'd like to see Kristal get together with Jonathan | Coachman over on Raw. More "sense" from censorship: When Vito's dress was down, his ass was blurred; when he raised the dress as he pranced around the ring, there was no blurring. WTF?! Did that really happen?! I dislike Booker T, but I hate seeing a man degraded like that. Even Flair was able to recover from being Foley's bitch. Booker T should be ashamed. | Boogeyman's on his way back. -to the land of the gimmick, and the home of the ridiculous. I remember announcers like Ventura, Heenan, those people, saying things like "Say what you will about him/He may be the strangest man we've ever seen in WWF, but he is a great/smart wrestler" and that bizarre character would have a surprisingly great wrestling match. That does not seem to matter anymore, as long as the gimmick "works". Even every UFC fighter has a nickname ("gimmick") now. Like WWE, the names do not make the fights interesting. UFC usually bores the Hell out of me, but the best matches are when the fighters repeatedly escape each other's holds. | Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP). Chavo and Rey might be under contract to Vince and pretty much have to do what they're told, but the fact that Vicki is also participating in this is most likely entirely her decision. -- Presto, APWW's Sexiest Man - "Roses are red, Vilolets are blue, You lookin at me?! | Kennedy out of the ring. Chavo knocks Rey into Vicki, who | is trying to stop the fighting. She pushes Chavo away, and | Rey backs away up the ramp, fighting back some tears. | They're talking about turning Vicki, but do they really | need to do that? I'd rather see this be the end of | the Diva Search, period. If I want your opinion, I'll ask AJ. We are only five-hundred internet fans who want wrestling and not the crap that is getting us to delete WWE from our television schedules. WWE has millions [waits for doggy response] of fans that like that stuff. They must. As I said, they are still attending the shows. | He even took over play-by-play near the end of the match, | which merited getting muted. Cole's silence, not the yakking. Bradshaw's reaction to the leprechaun was funny, though. |
