SEX AND THE DESIGNER
Welcome to a new, bold world where sexual elements in designs are no longer a taboo Delhi-based designer Manish Arora will christen his new menswear line ‘Get Laid’
A re you one of those who snigger when someone orders a Safe Sex on the Beach? Then this one is for you. Fashion is fun and now it is pun. Welcome to the new, bold world of fashion designers where the overriding feeling is that if you include an element of sex or abuse in your creativity, read design, it will increase the glamour quotient of your product. Well, we are here talking about inspirations, labels and punch lines that make heads turn.
The brand name FCUK (French Connection United Kingdom) is amusing and used to the hilt by such fun slogans as ‘What the FCUK?’ on T-shirts and campaigns — one of their old hoardings reads ‘night all long FCUK’.
The flavour is not only international. Mumbai-based designer Nisha JamVwal had named her last collection ‘Sex with my ex’! She tries to explain, “I have created this collection for a woman in the age group of 20-30 who is having a physical relationship with her ex-flame.” Kolkata’s Kiran Uttam Ghosh says the Vagina Monologues is her muse for her Spring-Summer ’06 collection, expressing the individuality of woman. “It might be a play but also symbolises a movement for women. It is not just about the emancipation of women, but also about individualism.” Want some more fun? Take a look at designer duo Jiten Thukral and Sumir Thagra’s label titled ‘Bosedkdesigns’ and their sub-brand Bagh Bosedk. Is that whacky or what? Watch out for their forthcoming label: it only promises to get more naughty with the soon-to-be-launched cosmetic line called Rose Mary Marlo. Reason for the name? Simple. Rosemary, a herb, is one of the ingredients of the cosmetics.
And the designer known for his kitschy style, Manish Arora, is soon going to launch a men’s line called Get Laid.
You need any analysing there — the line speaks for itself.
