Default Impact Analysis Report, 11/16

Beginning this week, we're crossposting to the APWW groups in the hopes
of people providing feedback.

TNA Impact had 1 previous prime-time outing on Spike that I passed on
back in the spring. Now, they're in for the long haul, or at least
until there's a panic attack at the network......

Eric Young is now referred to as the "Pied Piper" of TNA. Whatever. To
me, he's now their mascot. Heh, he'd be a better fit as Jimmy Olsen in
the next Superman movie than the schlep they hired for "Superman
Returns". I digress. The World tag team champs, the Latin American
Xchange, interrupt before Eric can make some sort of big announcement.
LAX, meanwhile, is threatening to burn the American flag. America's
Most Wanted, who've turned face as a result of this feud, attack and
chase out the champs with the help of the returning Gail Kim.
Undaunted, Konnan decides to go ahead with the flag-burning at a remote
location, and Petey Williams joins the fun, with Christy Hemme tagging
along, playing Lois Lane.......

1. Samoa Joe def. Jay Lethal. Not quite a total squash. Joe's back to
being a heel, and I blame Vince Russo for this. The fans want to cheer
Joe, but to prevent a 50/50 split in fan reaction in his match against
Kurt Angle at Genesis, he's becoming more vicious than ever. Lethal,
who's also feuded with Joe in Ring of Honor, held his own briefly, but
succumbed to the muscle buster and the Kokina Clutch. I guess with Jeff
Jarrett on holiday, they needed someone to be a top heel, since they
don't believe Abyss can fill the role effectively enough. Joe refused
to break the hold until Sonjay Dutt came down and made the save, but
Dutt too was caught in the clutch. Chris Sabin then came down, then
backed away, which made Jerry Lynn very upset.

Team 3D interview. Brother Ray put over the Naturals' attack last week,
and gave them some major mad props.

2. The Naturals def. Team 3D in a table match. Absurdity of the night
came when Mike Tenay claimed that Team 3D hadn't ever lost a table
match. As the Dudleyz, they did lose a few in WWE, but Tenay figures
the audience knows Team 3D's history and will take his word as gospel.
Shane Douglas sacrificed himself by eating a 3D through a table, which
woke up the Nats. Ray ends up getting a 3D of his own, kissing canvas,
and Devon is put through after a double-team spinebuster to end it.

Back comes Young, hoping to make that big announcement, but then
Frankie Kazarian, Matt Bentley, and Johnny Devine are out, dressed
rather bizarrely. Devine has just joined up with the other two after
losing a 3-way last week. I believe it's Kazarian who's acting as the
spokesman for what will be known as the Movement. I've read that
Raven's attached to this group, and is probably reaching for some
Grecian Formula as we speak. It's looking like Young's in trouble
until.......

The Voodoo Kin Mafia, formerly the James Gang, clears out the ring and
cuts a promo of their own. BG does most of the talking, referring to
HHH & HBK by their real names and declaring war on Crazy Vinnie & DX.
1998 called, guys. Take a hike and tell yer story walkin'! They took
too long to get to the point, but then, that's ironic, because that's
been HHH's biggest problem in cutting promos.

3. Christian Cage def. Rhino. 6 sides of steel, with barbed wire across
the top. "Prison Break" fans could appreciate this, 'cause it felt like
someone was going to start a jailbreak. Anyway, these two went back &
forth, and it was Rhino's own aggressive offense that cost him the
match, as he gored Cage straight out the door to victory. Good stuff.

4. X Division title: Christopher Daniels def. Chris Sabin & AJ Styles
to win the title. Best match on the show. Fast paced, but it ended
rather abruptly. Cage, newly bandaged after the last match, came back
out and declared he should be the #1 contender. Styles drop-kicked him
off the apron, and they brawled to the back, setting up their match at
the PPV. Daniels countered the cradle shock into a crucifix to pin
Sabin and regain the title. Styles loses the title without jobbing,
which might tick some people off, but the match created two matches for
the PPV, as Sabin goes mano-a-mano with Daniels on Sunday. Styles gets
a rub working with Cage. Those two matches by themselves could steal
the show.

Back to LAX for a moment. They're at a park somewhere in Orlando. You
can hear Christy off-camera pleading with Konnan to stop, but he won't
listen. He gives Williams the blowtorch, but Petey turns face and talks
about America being a land of opportunity. He throws the torch away,
and is beaten down, doused with gasoline. Sirens suggest the police are
coming, so LAX rabbits out, foiled again.

5. Kurt Angle def. Abyss. I'm sorry, but not even an Olympic champion
could follow the X division 3-way. Abyss hit the shock treatment way
too early in the match, which telegraphed that this wasn't going to be
his night. Jim Mitchell left the ring for a time, and came back before
commercial with a wheelbarrow full of thumbtacks. He emptied the
wheelbarrow, but the tacks never came into play. Abyss avoided the
Olympic Slam and hit the Black Hole Slam, but Angle kicked out,
recovered, and eventually applied the anklelock (now known as the
Anglelock). Abyss struggled, but once Kurt went to the grapevine, Abyss
finally tapped.

Post-match, Joe returned and the fight was on. Angle hit a
belly-to-belly suplex. It went to the floor, where Joe waffled Kurt
with a chair. Abyss recovered and they doubled on Angle until Sting
made the scene, rappelling from the rafters. Abyss & Sting brawled to
the back, and Joe locked on the Kokina Clutch, while Sting was snared
and hung upside down with a chain as Abyss beat him down with his own
baseball bat to end the show.

Next week, the Impact reviews will be posted after Impact signs off at
10.

*I thought the Eric Young thing was a weak spot in the show. This whole "I
have an announcement that never quite gets out until the end" thing has to
be done well. TNA's writers aren't at that level yet.

I think Samoa Joe being a heel is a good idea, but, as you alluded to, it
was done for the wrong reason. I think he's kind of a throwback to a Stan
Hanson or even a Road Warriors (when they were heels, of course) type of
vibe. Of course, I wish TNA could get beyond this "White Hat/Black Hat"
mentality.

It looks like TNA has taken a page from the WWE rule book. They mention Team
3D's world title history but the "WWE" or "ECW" never passes anybody's lips.
BTW, it's nice seeing Devon and Bubba Ray again.

Agreed. Voodoo Kin Mafia has to get over themselves. LAX has the titles.
America's Most Wanted are former and possibly future champs. If this is what
VKM (coincidently, as BG mentioned, are Uncle Vinny's initials) has to
offer...

The problem was, as it was in WCW, was the hype behind the match. They made
so much of how this was Angle's first televised match in TNA that, as usual.
the match couldn't live up to the hype.

So, what did I think. Not GREAT (as, say, the old Saturday Night NWA show on
TBS), but very much better than Uncle Vinny's Flying Circus. There was more
than one match that was either very good or. at the very least, did not
suck. Also, with all the drawbacks of SJ's Character, it's nice seeing that
they can create a Samoan character that doesn't come out with wild hair. Or
some sort of grass skirt. Or in face paint. Or acts like a total wild
savage. Also, I couldn't care less for Don West. Now I'm gonna have
flashbacks of Steve McMichael until New Year's Day. On a scale of 1 to 10,
maybe a 6 or 7.

I'm not sure who's writing with Vince Kangarusso.

Russo is writing the same way he did 10 years ago. Apparently, he's
spent too much time at bible school to realize that the business has
changed, and he must adjust to the changes.

They don't want to give the boys up north too much lip service. Could
result in some reprisals come Monday.

Their greatest strength was with BG at the mic, cutting funny promos.
There's a better chance of Team 3D getting the NWA tag titles before
these out of touch clowns.

I've already stated my case in that regard. Some of the TNA Uncreative
team also worked for WCW, probably with Russo. I think you can figure
the rest.

I neglected to mention West doing a house ad for Spike that was a
parody of home shopping channels. The less said about Kevin Nash's
antics with Austin Starr & Alex Shelley, the better. Maybe Spike can
get him a sitcom.

It's a threeheaded troll consisting of Russo, Jeff Jarrett and Dutch
Mantell.

Nice to see Eric seems to be out of the "They're going to fire me"
gimmick for awhile. Petey helping AMW nullify Konnan might make for
some fun.

Joe does still have some issues with Sting since he let Sting get
beat-up after helping in a tag-match against Jarrett and Steiner in the
summer. The only reason he could really have been considered face was
due to antagonizing Jarrett a couple months ago. I think Joe's going
to get the title pretty soon, regardless of what he and Angle do at
Genesis. Sabin is finally getting interesting as a heel, and Dutt
could do well to join him on the dark side.

Wonder if the "Movement" and Raven could be tied onto Mitchell and
Abyss (tho we know Mitchell doesn't trust Raven after he 'mentally
poisoned' Runt). Last week (or was it two weeks ago) they were helping
Christian against Rhyno. It's fun to hear Angle and the former NAO
whine about the WWE, given how they all got good runs up there. Never
mind the fact that the Outlaws joined DX after HBK dissappeared.

Really, better than anything WWE had on this week. Finish reminds me
of Big Show slamming JBL through the mat once and JBL crawling out to
end the match. And Christian and Rhino are both looking strong.

They are bouncing the X title around a bit much for my taste, and
Daniels really should be moving into the World title scene first chance
he gets. Is Cage-Styles confirmed for Genesis? That PPV gets better
all the time.

Angle-Abyss was good enough for Angle's TNA debut. Probably way too
soon for Sting to lose the belt, or Angle-Joe to have a decisive
finish. Somehow I think these two matchs will cross-over at Genesis to
make some Sting./Angle vs. Joe/Abyss tag matches in the following
weeks. The heels seem dangerous enough. But Sting really never
should've gotten the title to begin with, someone else should've
overthrown Jarrett.

Nah. Why bother?

Tenay referred to Young as being paranoid, so that gimmick's still in
effect, unfortunately.

Can't see Dutt as a heel here. If Sting gets past Abyss, he won't get
by Joe or Angle, as it'll probably end up a 3-way at the December PPV.

You know the old saying, never let the facts get in the way of a good
story. Doubtful that the Movement & Raven will be linked to Mitchell,
who has had past feuds with Raven.

You refer to No Way Out 2005. I'm reminded, too, of Show debuting in
WWF in 1999, and helping Stone Cold (albeit inadvertently) beat Crazy
Vinnie (Valentine's Day Massacre).

Yes, it is. Someone doesn't want Daniels in the World title hunt, but
he is very deserving of at least getting a sniff.

Agreed across the board.

They've been trying to turn Joe heel for so long, you almost have to
admire their tenacity. Joe will always be a 'tweener.

You can only go so far trying to simultaneously ape both Kane and
Mankind.

What's the point of making Chris Sabin a heel? He doesn't have the
personality to pull it off.

They did look like three little Raven clones. At least Spike/Runt has
a unique look with the mohawk.

Christian Cage is no Michael Scofield. Now if Raven had been
involved....

I've always felt that TNA's gimmick matches are way too gimmicky. This
was a good example. They already had a cage with barbed wire and bolt
cutters, yet they need to add a straight jacket into the mix. Geeze,
beating each other up should not be this complicated.

And don't get me started on Ultimate X....

Speaking of recycled gimmicks, WWE tried this with Test and "The
Unamericans" a few years ago. But I must admit that TNA is doing it
better.
