Giles may not make it to India due to stalled recovery
Giles may not make it to India due to stalled recovery London, Jan 26: England left-arm spinner Ashley Giles' tour to India was in jeopardy when he was referred back to a specialist after not being able to resume bowling following a hip operation last month.
As the ashes winners are due to depart for the tour, comprising three Tests and seven one-day internationals, in less than three weeks, time was not on the side of the Warwickshire cricketer.
"Ashley hasn't made the progress that we'd want him to make and he's got some concerns that we share," ECB's chief medical officer Peter Gregory told 'The Daily Telegraph'.
"Before we start to push him too hard we thought it sensible to seek a further opinion from the specialist."
Giles had returned early from England's tour to Pakistan and had the surgery on December 7. His rehabilitation programme included early morning swimming sessions and rowing exercises. But the recovery process went off track in the last few days.
The original plan was to resume bowling by now but he is not sure when he will be allowed to turn his arm over.
"Something 'catches' him" whenever Giles moves his right leg across, England physiotherapist Kirk Russell said about the pain.
The first of three back-to-back Tests starts in Nagpur on March 1 so the England think tank would not like to take any chances.
A spot for an extra spinner is vacant in the touring party and if Giles cannot make it, Somerset captain Ian Blackwell could be the likely replacement.
