Christopher Michael (Chris) Benot (born May 21, 1967 in Montral, Qubec), is a Canadian professional wrestler currently wrestling for World Wrestling Entertainment on its SmackDown! brand. Benoit, who grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, is widely known as one of the most technically proficient and skilled athletes in the pro wrestling world today. He trained in Calgary, Alberta under Stu Hart in his "Dungeon" and became one of the many stars to emerge from Stu's watch, alongside notables like Bret and Owen Hart, Davey Boy Smith, Lance Storm, Chris Jericho, and others. He is known by the nicknames The Canadian Crippler and The Rabid Wolverine.
Benoit only has two major characters that he plays, both based heavily on his real life. Regardless of which character he plays, he is a ruthless wrestling machine -- a man who knows every hold, every throw, and every counter -- and will go to extraordinary lengths to win matches. He has very few catchphrases, preferring instead to let his talent speak for itself. As a heel, Benoit's only real joy comes from winning matches and inflicting pain. He is an extremely dangerous person and often serves as a "hired gun" for others in order to satisfy his own need to win. As a face, Benoit is a thankless hard worker, somebody who has worked for years and sacrificed heavily, in order to perfect his craft, to become the best there is at what he does. He is often passed over by management that wants a hand-picked "corporate champion", causing him to work even harder than anybody else to make it to the top. |

Early Career
Chris began his career in 1986 in Stu Hart's Stampede Wrestling promotion. He won several International Tag Team and British Commonwealth titles there, and had an excellent series of singles matches with Johnny Smith, before Stampede's demise in 1989, and at that point he departed for New Japan Pro Wrestling under the name and mask of The Pegasus Kid, later simply Wild Pegasus. While with NJPW, he came into his own as a performer in matches with luminaries like Jushin Liger, Shinjiro Ohtani, Black Tiger (Eddie Guerrero), and El Samurai. In 1991, he won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title from Liger, his first major championship. He would eventually lose the title, and his mask, back to Liger. He would go on to win the Super J Cup tournament in 1994 by defeating the likes of Black Tiger (Eddie Guerrero) and the Great Sasuke, which, to this day, is considered one of the best wrestling cards of all time, solidifying his status as one of the foremost junior heavyweights in the world. |

Extreme Championship Wrestling
Upon his permanent return to the U.S. in 1995, he signed with Extreme Championship Wrestling. In his brief time with ECW, Benoit dropped his Pegasus gimmick for "The Crippler", a reference to a match in which he accidentally broke the neck of Sabu. Later, he and Dean Malenko won the ECW Tag Team Titles and created enough excitement to attract the attention of the World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling. After being unable to obtain a proper work visa to compete for ECW and being told flat out that as a WWF competitor he would not be able to work in Japan, Benoit decided that he would return to Japan instead of wrestling in the US until learning about the New Japan/WCW talent exchange. This lead to Benoit signing with WCW in late 1995. |

![]() Chris Benoit and Woman Benoit's time in WCW was defined by highs and lows. He quickly was made a member of the reformed Four Horsemen in 1996, alongside Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and Brian Pillman. A strikingly real feud with Kevin Sullivan (due to the fact that Benoit was having a real affair with Sullivan's wife, Woman, mirroring the storyline started by Sullivan himself where Benoit had an affair with Woman, they were even told to hold hands in public to fool everyone) and several matches on the hunt for the U.S. Title highlighted much of 1996, but with the rise of the New World Orderstorylines in the middle of that year, Benoit struggled to keep himself in the public eye. Many of his fans began to perceive a lack of respect for his abilities from the higher-ups, and indeed for a short time he was promoted as "the best wrestler to never win a WCW title." Throughout this time, however, he continued to put on outstanding matches, as bouts with Diamond Dallas Page and Raven in early 1998. Later that year, Benoit had a rivalry going with Booker T. Both men had tried at winning the WCW Television Championship, but both were unsuccessful. This led to a competition to see who would go on to be the number one contender for the title. This set up the Best-of-Seven series. Benoit won the first three falls, and Booker came back to tie it all up. Their final match was set before the Great American Bash. While the referee was down, Bret Hart came to interfere on behalf of Benoit, in hopes of him joining the New World Order. Benoit refused, and told the referee what happened, and got himself disqualified. Booker thought it was a hollow victory, so they were to have a match the Bash to see who go on to fight Dave Finlay later that night. Both made a valiant effort with Benoit delivering suplexes and Booker giving a mulitude of hard kicks. It ended with a missile dropkick by the Bookman, and he went on to fight Finlay for the belt later that night. This elevated both men's careers considerably as singles competitors, and both would remain at the top of the midcard with their matches. In 1999, he resumed teaming with new Horseman and former ECW partner Dean Malenko, and a series of WCW Tag Team Champion matches with Raven and Perry Saturn were among the best of the year. Benoit and Malenko defeated Curt Hennig and Barry Windham to win the WCW Tag Team Championship, and later in 1999 he would win the United States title as well. He formed the "Revolution" team with Malenko, Saturn, and Shane Douglas around this time, highlighting his disgruntledness with WCW management. From here, a last-ditch effort to raise his stakes was made, and by late 1999, he was facing Bret Hart on several occasions. One was their tribute match to Owen Hart in October 1999, in Kansas City where Owen had died. In November, he wrestled Bret in Toronto, Ontario in the finals of a World Heavyweight title tournament. He lost that match, and by January 2000, WCW had made their last try at keeping him, giving him the WCW World Heavyweight Title in a victory over Sid Vicious. However, Benoit forfeited the title the next day when he decided to depart for the World Wrestling Federation, with Guerrero, Saturn, and Malenko, to protest the promotion of Kevin Sullivan as head booker. |

World Wrestling Entertainment
Two weeks after being granted their release from WCW, Benoit, Malenko, Saturn and Guerrero made their WWF TV debuts on Raw, coming out of the crowd to attack the New Age Outlaws. They were dubbed The Radicalz. After the group turned heel, Benoit was quickly put into a feud with Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle, and in April 2000 he won his first championship in the WWF, the Intercontinental Title. Because of how often he defended his WWF Intercontinental Title, Chris Benoit has been called the "fightingest" Intercontinental Champion in WWF history. The Jericho feud and a high-profile feud with The Rock (who was the WWF Champion at the time) filled out the remainder of 2000. In fact, Benoit "won" the WWF title twice during 2000, but both times the decision was reversed and the match restarted due to Benoit's cheating. He remained the Intercontinental Champion into 2001, which he lost the belt to Chris Jericho in a ladder match at the Royal Rumble. He eventually turned face, and had an incredible match against Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania X-Seven. It was a technical clinic until Angle got an unfair advantace by holding the tights. This started a feud between the two, which they had a great variety of specialty matches. One was an ultimate submission, which Benoit won 4-3, at sudden death overtime. In June, they would have an incredible steel cage match, which both men had jumped off of the cage. Angle did a moonsault, but missed. A couple minutes later, Benoit did his swan dive headbutt, and nailed it. He was about to win (ten German Suplexes later), when Steve Austin closed the door on his face. Angle climbed out the other way for the win. To get at Angle, he attacked him from behind, and stole his gold medals. He came out a week later guaranteeing their safety in a "safe and warm place" in his pants. An infuriated Angle challenged him to a two out of three falls match at Judgment Day. First fall was pinfall only, Benoit won. Second fall was submission only, Angle won. The third fall, if necessary, would be a ladder match with the medals suspended above the ring. Angle won from the help of Edge & Christian in their plan, "Operation: Never hear Kurt Angle bitch about his gold medals again". An angry wolverine would team with old rival, Chris Jericho, to win Tag Team Turmoil late that night, last defeating Edge and Christian. As Number one contenders for the World Tag Team Championship, Benoit and Jericho would fight Triple H, and Steve Austin in match for their belts, and won. They held on to the title for a month , before losing it to the Dudley Boyz. At King of the Ring, he was put in a triple threat for the WWF Championship against the champion, Austin, and former partner, Jericho. In the match, Benoit had landed hard on his neck. Benoit underwent major neck surgery after a wrestling match with X-Pac where he suffered a botched X-Factor. A neck injury meant spinal fusion surgery and sidelined Benoit for most of 2002. He ruptured a disc, which fragmented into his spinal column. During the first WWE Draft he was picked by McMahon to be part of the new SmackDown! roster, although still on the injured list. However, when he returned, he did so as a member of the RAW roster. He, and Eddie Guerrero, were then moved to Smackdown during a storyline "open season" on wrestler contracts, with Benoit bringing his newly won Intercontinental championship with him briefly before Rob Van Dam exercised his rematch clause and returned the title to RAW. After returning to SmackDown, he was crowned the first winner of the WWE Tag Team Titles, alongside foe and partner Kurt Angle, in October. They both turned face again by betraying Los Guerreros. Angle won his third WWE Championship from the Big Show and Benoit faced him for the title at the 2003 Royal Rumble, in what many called the match of the year. People had called the intensty and moves both men displayed as unreal. Though Benoit lost the match, he received a sanding ovation for his efforts. This put him back in the tag team title hunt. They placed him in a tag team match with an unknown partner, Rhyno. The Man-Beast had just come back from back surgery, and was drafted to the SmackDown! brand. The two had good chemistry, and focused on becoming the champions. Then at WrestleMania XIX, the WWE Tag Team Champions, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin would have to put their belts on the line against Benoit and Rhyno, and Los Guerreros in a triple threat match. Team Angle retained by pinning Chavo Guerrero Jr. Benoit kept at the bottom of the card for the next few months, feuding with John Cena and the Full Blooded Italians, and teaming with Rhyno occassionally. In June of 2003, General Manager, Stephanie McMahon, had decided to reactivate the United States Heavyweight Championship. Benoit participated in the tournament for the belt, first beating Rhyno, then Matt Hardy. He was set to fight Eddie Guerrero at Vengeance (Eddie had just defeated Ultimo Dragon and Billy Gunn). The two had wrestled fairly that night, but when the their competitive juices started to boil, Latino Heat did what Guerreros do best, lie, cheat, and steal. Benoit was able to evade all the tactics, until the referee got knocked down. Rhyno came down, seemingly going to help Benoit, but Gored him down. This allowed Eddie to get the pin. This led to a feud between the three, along with Tajiri for the title, and they had a Fatal Four Way for it at SummerSlam, which Eddie retained. This led to a match against A-Train. Benoit won by making him tap out to the Crossface. This led to A-Train to take him out backstage. Rhyno helped by Goring him into a steel door. Benoit had his eyes on Train, and challenged him to a match at No Mercy. Benoit got the victory by making him tap out to the Sharpshooter (in honor of his late trainer, Stu Hart). This attracted the attention of Kurt Angle, and he joined his Survivor Series team along with Bradshaw, Hardcore Holly, and John Cena. Benoit and Cena were the sole survivors by making Brock Lesnar tap out, and pinning Big Show after |

World Heavyweight Champion
On January 25, 2004, Benoit won the 2004 Royal Rumble, last eliminating Big Show, and thus a title shot at WrestleMania XX. As a result of the long-standing Royal Rumble tradition that the winner receives a shot at the world champion at WrestleMania and the fact that there were effectively two world champions due to the brand split, Benoit exploited a "loophole" in the rules and challenged World Heavyweight ChampionTriple H instead of the WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. This "loophole" clause has become standard storyline practice, with the Royal Rumble winner being free to choose which title he will challenge for. With this win, Benoit became one of only two men to enter at #1 and win the Royal Rumble (Shawn Michaels was the first) and he set the record for being in a Rumble match the longest at 1:01:34, narrowly surpassing Bob Backlund's record of slightly over an hour (1:01:10), while Shawn Michaels' Rumble win was at 38:37 and even surpassing Ric Flair's legendary record of 59:26. Though the match was originally intended to be a one-on-one match, Shawn Michaels, whose Last Man Standing match against Triple H at the Royal Rumble for the World Heavyweight Championship ended in a draw, thought that he deserved to be in the main event. When it was time for Benoit to sign the contract putting him in the main event, Michaels superkicked him and signed his name on the contract, which eventually resulted in a Triple Threat Match between Michaels, Benoit, and the champion Triple H. On Sunday, March 14, 2004, at WrestleMania XX, in what is considered to be the greatest moment in his career, Chris Benoit won the World Heavyweight Championship, forcing Triple H to tap out to his signature move, the Crippler Crossface, which ended the main event of WrestleMania for the first time in submission. After the match, an emotional Benoit celebrated his win with his good friend, the late Eddie Guerrero, the reigning WWE Champion. The two of them came to WWE together and on that day, they were standing in the ring at Madison Square Garden, both of them world champions. This was Benoit's first official WWE World title win - he had "won" the WWF Title on two occasions, once at Fully Loaded and once at Unforgiven 2000. However, both times the decision was over-ruled. Besides his single day reign as WCW World Heavyweight Champion, this was Benoit's first real World Heavyweight Title reign in any promotion. The triple threat was hailed by many fans as one of the year's best matches. The rematch was held at Backlash in Benoit's hometown of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Benoit once again came out the winner, this time making Shawn Michaels tap out to the Sharpshooter. On August 15, 2004, Chris Benoit was defeated by Randy Orton for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam. His reign had lasted 5 months, with 7 straight pay-per-view victories. He had successful, high-profile defenses against Triple H, Michaels, and Kane, among others. During this time, he became the only man to retain a title in an Iron Man Match. He also defeated Kane in back-toback nights to retain the belt. Later, Benoit participated in the Elimination Chamber at New Year's Revolution on January 9, 2005. He would then reunite with old partner Chris Jericho, making a few attempts at capturing the World Tag Titles. The two separated after the team failed to capture the gold from then-champions La Resistance. Benoit participated in a "Money in the Bank" ladder match for a title shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 21 on April 3, 2005, which was won by Edge. An infuriated Benoit had wrestled Edge the night after with taped ribs, ten stitches, and crippled arm. He, surprisingly, rolled him up for the win. The two would interfere in eachothers matches throughout April. This led to a brutal Last Man Standing Match, which was won by Edge, due to a brick to the back of Benoit's head. The night aterwards, Benoit was entered into the Gold Rush Tournament for #1 Contemdership for the World Heavyweight Championship. First night, he forced Triple H to submit to the sharpshooter. The next week, he would lose to Kane, after being attacked from behind after he helped Kane's wife, Lita. This led to announcement of ECW One Night Stand, a reunion for former wrestlers of Extreme Championship Wrestling. Benoit, himself, was an alumnus, so he wanted to commemerate the promotion by wrestling Tajiri, but was cancelled due to the interference of Eric Bischoff, claiming it was garbage wrestling. An outraged Vince McMahon came back the next week to hold the match again. Benoit won by making Tajiri submit to a Crossface with a kendo stick. The build-up for the pay oer view was immense, and Bischoff put Benoit in a tables match against Gene Snitsky a week before ECW. Out of no where, D-Von and Bubba Ray Dudley came into the ring, and beat Snitsky to a bloody pulp. Benoit took to the air, and flew through the table with Snitsky. |

Return to SmackDown!
Benoit appeared at ECW One Night Stand, defeating Eddie Guerrero and on June 9, 2005, returned to SmackDown! after being selected in the 2005 WWE Draft Lottery. On July 24, 2005 at The Great American Bash in Buffalo, New York, Benoit failed to win the WWE United States Championship from Orlando Jordan. Benoit faced Orlando Jordan in a rematch for the United States Championship at SummerSlam 2005. Benoit defeated Jordan in 25 seconds with the Crippler Crossface to win the title. On the next two editions of SmackDown!, Benoit defeated Jordan by submission in 23.4 seconds and 22.5 seconds. Two weeks later, Benoit defeated Jordan by submission in 49.8 seconds. Benoit retained his U.S. Title in a fatal four way match against Orlando Jordan, Booker T and Christian when he made Christian submit to the Sharpshooter at the 2005 WWE No Mercy. He lost the U.S. Title to Booker T, on the October 21, 2005 edition of SmackDown! due to interference from Sharmell, Booker T's wife. On October 28 edition of SmackDown! General Manager Theodore Long showed a highlight footage of Sharmell interfering in Booker T's matches. Booker T and Sharmell went out to apologize to Benoit and Booker offered him a rematch for the U.S. championship. It turned out to be a set-up as Booker T knocked Benoit with the belt from behind, distracted by Sharmell. The following week on SmackDown, in light of the events that took place the previous week, General Manager Theodore Long sanctioned a United States Title match between Chris Benoit and Booker T. But after narrowly escaping a Crippler Crossface from the challenger, Booker retreated backstage with Sharmell and the match was declared a count out victory for Benoit. But since a championship cannot change hands on a count out, Booker ended up retaining the title. On the November 11th edition of SmackDown, Chris Benoit went one-on-one with John "Bradshaw" Layfield to try to earn a spot on the upcoming Survivor Series team for the SmackDown! brand. However, due to Booker and Sharmell's ringside interference, JBL ended up winning the match and securing the spot on the Survivor Series team. Chris Benoit appeared on RAW the following Monday (but taped on the 13th), the same day as the death of Eddie Guerrero, for Guerrero's tribute show hosted by both RAW and SmackDown! superstars. Benoit got very emotional during a series of video testimonials, which was a testament to the friendship that endured between Benoit and Guerrero throughout both men's careers. The same week on SmackDown, Benoit defeated Triple H in a remarkable tribute match to his fallen friend. Following the contest, Benoit, HHH, and Dean Malenko all assembled in the ring and pointed to the sky in salute of Guerrero. During a rematch for the WWE United States Championship, against the champion Booker_Huffman, Chris Benoit managed to counter Booker T after a superplex, and roll him up for the pin. There were two referees in the ring due to one being knocked out during the match, and another coming down to replace the injured one. At the time of the superplex, the first referee regained consciousness. So after the superplex, Benoit rolled Booker T up for a pin, but both mens shoulders were down and both referees counted the one-two-three. One referee claimed that Chris Benoit was the winner; the other claimed that Booker T was the winner. Teddy Long, the Smackdown General Manager, came to the ring and claimed that the title was being held up due to the disputed match, and that Booker T and Chris Benoit would have a Best of 7 series, and the winner of the series would be the United States Champion. Booker T won thrice in a row, due largely to his wife Sharmell 's interference, and Chris Benoit faced elimination in the series. Sharmell started carrying a broom to the ring when she came out with Booker T, indicating that he was going to sweep the series. At the recent Armageddon PPV, Benoit was able to kick out of a three count after a low blow through the ring ropes by Sharmell and a scissors kick by Booker T. He was then able to reverse Booker Ts Bookend into a DDT and force him to tap to the Crippler Crossface. Due to Booker_Huffman's recent groin injury, Randy Orton was chosen as a stand-in. Chris Benoit has won twice against Orton, bringing the series to a tie at 3-3. Since Booker T is expected to be ready to wrestle by the Royal Rumble on January 29, 2006, it is more than likely that Benoit will face Booker T at the PPV to finish the series. |
