Add Style, Softness, and Drama
A canopy bed may sound exotic and out of reach. But really, a canopy bed can be made with a simple swag of fabric or by constructing an elaborate draped treatment. Our article about canopy beds will give you lots of ideas and pictures of simple and not-so-simple styles of canopy beds that will help to add romance to your bedroom. The easiest way to create a simple canopy for your bed is to hang a piece of fabric over the top frame rails of a structured canopy bed. But if your bed doesn't have a canopy frame, there are other ways to get the look of a canopy and to surround your bed in softness and color. You can achieve a very attractive canopy bed look by installing curtain check post 7 rods to the ceiling, placing one over each end of the bed. Using either tab-top, tie-top, pinch-pleated or gathered panels, attach the fabric to each curtain rod and let it drape softly to the floor. You can also attach a short rod to the ceiling, perpendicular to the head of the bed on each side. Hang the panels to the floor and tie back with a drapery tieback. A dramatic crown canopy check post 3, also called a coronet, looks elegant in any bedroom. Attach panels of fabric around the outer edge of a half-circle of 3/4" plywood. This half-circle can be attached directly to the ceiling or floated just off the ceiling with L-brackets attached to the wall. You can add a romantic look to a plain-Jane bed by draping long fabric panels through a wooden or metal ring attached to the ceiling above the center of the head of the bed. Draw the fabric panel through the ring, pulling it down to the floor on either side of the bed. Spread the panels out to display more fabric and frame the bed or drape the panels around the bed posts at the head of the bed. Another simple treatment is to install a ring on the ceiling at both sides of the head of the bed and draw the long fabric panel through both rings. Swag the area between the two rings at the ceiling to form a lush top frame for your bed. The panels should extend to the floor on both sides of the bed. If you install 4 rings check post 4, one at each corner of the bed, try drawing a long panel of fabric through each one. Be sure one end of the panel at each ring goes all the way to the floor. With four panels of luxurious fabric draped above and down the sides of your bed, the look is very elegant. You can really use any type of fabric you want to create a beautiful canopy bed. Traditional fabrics for canopies are chintz, silk, velvet,or tapestry check post 2. But you can achieve a fun look for a country setting with muslin or gingham or charming calico. You can also use sheets that coordinate with your bedding to construct the long panels for a uniform look. For ease of use and simplicity of style, bed hangings are generally cut to touch the floor when hung. If you prefer a luxurious look, cut the panels 4" longer and "puddle" the fabric on the floor check post 4 at the edge of the bed. Be sure to lift the panel when you need to vacuum the floor. For a truly professional look, more body, and longer wear, add lining to the panel of fabric or use a coordinating print or solid for the back of the panel. After all, the inside and outside of the panel will both show when you swag it. Add borders, fringe, ribbon trim, and cording. Coordinate trims with tiebacks, adding color, texture, and body. Remember that a tieback will pull the fabric off the floor, so cut the panels slightly longer. Go on to see more views of beautiful canopy beds and swag treatments. You're sure to see a style that will give a wonderful romantic look to your personal sanctuary. Start with post 2 for views of Formal Canopy Beds. Formal Canopy Bed Hangings
Yards of fabric add softness and color The canopy bed styles shown on this page may best be left to professional workrooms, yet their elegant fullness and some of the details might inspire more experienced home sewers. When designing gathered draperies and valances, be sure to specifiy two to three times fullness for the most luxurious look. And, as shown in the lower photo, pleated and gathered drapery panels at each corner combine easily with the tailored box pleats seen on the top valance. Treatments like this also demand that the inside look as beautiful as the outside. Be sure to finish off or disguise any hardware, raw edges, staples, or other less-than-beautiful details of the installation. Linings, braids, cordings and other trims can take your project from so-so to perfect. Full Bed Hangings with Reading Lights ![]() A deeply colored toile and coordinating silk fabrics from Lee Jofa and Kravet grace this full canopy bed. This type of treatment requires many yards of fabric and linings since it is gathered to triple fullness. Gathered, Shaped, and Lined Canopy ![]() A fresh floral chintz and coordinating check lining create a fresh and appealing bed canopy. Reading lamps and a mirror have been attached to the wall through slits in the fabric. See a similar treatment without the lamps on Post 6. |

Crown Canopy Beds
Elegant looks with less fabric A crown canopy makes a dramatic statement in a room. Long fabric panels fall from under a valanced top section, making a sweep of color and style that is unforgettable. The photos below show two variations of the crown canopy style. In one the plain fabric is on the outside of the panel while the patterned fabric (also used on the bedskirt) forms an eye-catching lining. The lower photo shows hangings that place the colored fabric on the outside and the more neutral cream fabric as the liner. In this case the area of cream fabric has been made more interesting by hanging a mirror right over it. Home sewers may be able to find ready-made crown canopy units in a home sewing store. Mount the crown-shaped unit on the wall and hang fabric from it according to the package directions. Lined Crown Canopy with Bordered Valance ![]() Richly patterned red and cocoa fabrics have been shaped into a stunning crown bed canopy. Here the hardware has been attached to the wall so it does not interefere with the room's crown molding. Crown Canopy Treatment with Inset Miror ![]() Taupe taffeta bed hangings are shaped into a unique crown canopy. A round mirror adds interest to the cream colored lining seen over the headboard. |

Do It Yourself Ring Canopy
Simplier fabric hanging you can make yourself A ring canopy is a project anyone can do. It can even be a "no sew" project if you wish. Simply select four pieces of hardware that can be attached to the ceiling. Metal rings, wooden hoops, curtain tie-backs, towel rings, and even wire can work. Measure carefully so each ring is positioned above one corner of the bed. Install the rings with hardware that is sturdy enough for the weight of the fabric you've chosen. Lightweight sheers will look wonderful, yet you might also use cotton or silk to coordinate with the color scheme. Before purchasing fabric take the time to measure from the floor to the ceiling, adding another 12" for hems and puddling. Multiply this measurement by 8 to get the total yardage needed. A standard eight foot ceiling will require approximately 24 yards of fabric to swag over 4 rings. Finally, loop a long swag of fabric up and over the ring. The weight of the fabric will keep it in place. Puddle the hem as desired. Up and Over ![]() Loop a long length of fabric up and over a piece of hardware to create this easy canopy treatment. Draperies have been puddled on the floor for a more luxurious look. Simple Hanging Ring Hardware ![]() Here a metal ring has been hung from the ceiling on sturdy nylon line, for a bedroom look that's airy and elegant. |

Simple Swagged Canopy
Here's another canopy look that is easy to duplicate. You'll need to purchase and install a section of pipe, doweling, or curtain rod securely to the wall behind the bed. Place it in the range of six to eighteen inches below the ceiling. Attach to a wall stud whenever possible, however it should be centered over the bed. Also install two tiebacks on either side of the bed, about 30" or more off the floor. Next, measure for the length of the fabric using a piece of rope or string. Measure from the floor on one side of the bed, up and over the tiebacks and the center pipe, then back down to the floor. Make sure the string makes a graceful swag up to the top (as your fabric will) rather than being perfectly straight. To this measurement add about 1/2 yard extra fabric to allow for hems and the rod pocket. An unlined fabric (like the one shown in the top photo) looks best when fabric has two good sides. Otherwise sew a lining into your panel before stitching the rod pocket. In the alternative, the fabric can be "self lined" by folding it in half lengthwise before sewing in the top rod pocket. Dress up the look with contrasting linings, fringes, welting, tie-backs, or other interesting details. An Unlined Swagged Canopy Treatment ![]() One long length of fabric is all it will take for this treatment. Sew a simple rod pocket at the top and you're done. Lined Canopy with Trims ![]() A similar style swagged canopy shows the effect of using a lined panel that's been dressed up with a gathered border in a contrasting fabric. This is a great way to bring in more detail and color to coordinate the hangings with the bed pillows and comforter. |

More Bed Canopy Projects
This easy shelf canopy may look elaborate, yet it is a look that's easily duplicated. It's created by hanging a fabric-covered shelf high over the bed. Gather fabric panels onto lengths of wire, doweling, or curtain rods, and attach these to the inside and outside of the shelf. Cover any nails or hardware with lengths of decorative cording or braid glued in place. For a simpler look simply staple flat (or box-pleated) panels directly to the top of the shelf before attaching it to the wall. Most of these staples will be out of view on the top of the shelf behind the valance. Lighting can be added to this treatment providing the shelf is deep enough to accommodate an appropriate light fixture. Use caution when selecting and installing lights, however, since placing them to close to fabric could be a fire hazard. Be sure to consult an electrician for suggestions. Lined Shelf Canopy ![]() Pretty floral fabric adorns the outside of these bed hangings. A plain white linen fabric has been used as the canopy lining (and on the headboard). Thick green silk cording dresses up the line of gathering at the top of the valance. Reading Lights ![]() A deep shelf canopy may allow room to install downlights perfect for reading in bed. Consult an electrician or home center for fixtures appropriate for your installation. Be certain to choose cool burning fixtures in the proximity of fabric valances |

Curtain Rod Canopy Bed
Can you hang a curtain rod? If so then you're already overqualified to install this easy canopy bed treatment. Three standard curtain rods hung on the ceiling are all you'll need for this look. Be sure to attach the clips onto the rod before installation however, unless the clips have an opening that allows them to be attached to the pole after it is hung. Once the rods are in place, hang the curtains of your choice from the clip rings. An alternate treatment could use tab top panels, tie top drapes, or grommets to create the canopy hangings. Sheer Hangings for a Teen ![]() Hot pink sheers surround this bed in teenage style, yet choosing a different fabric can make the look appropriate for a guestroom or master bedroom as well. Attach with Clip Rings ![]() Inexpensive clip ring hardware makes the fabric hangings easy to adjust on the rod. |
